名前をつけてやる

Hi everyone, it's Kudoko who thought of "Ctrl + z" when I dumped potato chips out on my bed.

（こんにちは、ポテトチップスをベッドにぶちまけてしまった時ふとCtrl+zが頭に浮かんだくどこです。）

"Name the best thing that was invented or discovered by someone from your country."

When I read this sentence for the first time, I couldn't understand what that means.

（最初この文を見たとき、意味がわかりませんでした。）

The word "name" made me confused because I thought it means "give a name to something." However, if this were correct, that sentence could not make sense because "the best thing" must have already had its name given by someone who invented or discovered it. Although I knew about that, I couldn't think more flexibly then.

（"name"を、"名前をつける"と捉えてしまったからです。それだと、「日本で発明·発見されたもので一番スゴイものに名前を付けなさい」となり、意味不明な文になってしまいます。そういったスゴいもの達にはもうすでに名前があるに決まっています。とそこまでは分かるのに、当時はそれ以上思考がストップしてしまいました。）

As you've probably noticed, here "name" means "mention." So I should have mentioned something like karaoke, instant noodles, iced coffee, etc.

（お気付きのとおり、この文における"name"は、"名前を挙げる"ことを意味しています。なので正しくは「日本で発明·発見されたもので一番スゴイものを挙げなさい」となり、カラオケやインスタント麺、アイスコーヒーなどと答えるのが正解でした。）

To improve my English, flexibility is very important.

（英語力を上げるには頭の柔軟さがめちゃくちゃ大事だなあと実感させられる出来事でした。）
