The first blog of the new year might be a little bit heavy, so you don't have to read it if you're enjoying the new year holidays. Today's topic is about confusing English.

What's the difference of the phrases below?
（この3つのフレーズはどう違うのでしょうか？）
• I agree not to (verb) 〜
• I don't agree to (verb) 〜
• I disagree with (noun)
（· 〜しないことに賛成だ）
（· 〜することに賛成じゃない）
（· 〜に反対だ）
My landlord, he is Aussie, answered the question.
（オーストラリア人の大家さんが答えてくれました。）
To get straight to the point, which phrase you should use depends on the context.
（結論から言うと、話の前後関係によって変わるそうです。）
And if I have to add another point, "I agree not to 〜" and "I disagree with 〜" are more natural than "I don't agree to 〜."
（もうひとつ言うと、一番上の「I agree not to 動詞」と三番目の「I disagree with 名詞」、このふたつがより自然な言い回しなんだそうです。）
［Example］
• I agree not to wear jeans at school. ←natural
• I don't agree to wear jeans at school. ←unnatural
• I disagree with the school uniform policy. ←natural
［例文］
（· 学校でジーンズを履かないのに賛成だ。）
（· 学校でジーンズを履くのには賛成じゃない。）
（· その制服制度には反対だ。）
I put examples above.
When someone (hereinafter called he) says that he doesn't want to wear jeans at school and you also think so, you can say "I agree not to wear 〜." ("I agree with you" is also OK.)
（上に例文を載せてみました。たとえば、学校でジーンズを履くのは嫌だという人がいて自分もそう思う場合、「私も履かないのに賛成だ」という意味で「I agree not to wear 〜.」と言えます。
※シンプルに「I agree with you. (あなたに賛成)」でもOK!）
On the other hand, when he says that he wants to wear jeans at school while you don't think so, you can say "I don't agree to wear 〜." ("I don't agree with you" is also OK.) However, "I disagree with you" is more natural than that there. (You should not say "I disagree to wear 〜," because "disagree to (verb)" is unnatural.) So you should say "I disagree with you (or some nouns, for example, 'the school uniform policy')."
（一方、二番目の「I don't agree to wear 〜(履くのに賛成じゃない)」が使えるのは、話し相手がジーンズを履きたがっているけど自分はそうは思わないという場合です。しかしこのフレーズだとどうやら不自然らしいので、その代わりに「I disagree with 名詞. (〜に反対だ)」を使うんだそうです。ここで注意したいのは、「disagree 'to 動詞'」とは言わずに、「disagree 'with 名詞'」を使うことです。前者だと不自然なようです。）
